Diabetes is one common condition these days. One of its complications is the reduction in the rate by which wounds will heal. And since the feet are the body parts which might usually be wounded, diabetic foot ulcers have been a problem for a lot of diabetic patients. There are ways by which you can prevent these foot ulcers from developing. However, if you already have a wound in your foot that is starting to become serious, here are the ways by which you can make your wounds heal.
In order to keep contaminating your wound, you have to cover it up most of the time. This allows you to prevent dust and other potentially harmful organisms from going inside the tissues that are already open. Your chance of making the infection more serious is likewise greater if you just let your wounds open. You have to remember, though, that you need to regularly change your bandage. If your bandages are soaked, you need to change them. Even if they are not, you have to make sure that you apply a new one after some time.
Use shoes which are comfortable on your feet. Loose and light shoes can be the best ones for you to have. They allow your feet to breathe. At the same time, they keep dust and other contaminants away from your wounds. To increase your protection, you might want to wear socks every time you are out of your house. These socks will further help you keep contaminants off.
You may let your wound breathe. But, you have to do this only if you are in an environment where contaminants can be found less. While you are at home, you can take your bandages off.
As much as possible, do not put pressure directly on your foot ulcers. When there is a significant amount of pressure against the wound, you can see that it might get worse. Choose your shoes correctly. Keep from wearing those that are very tight against your ulcers. Also, if the ulcers are located underneath your feet or if it is located on the sole of your foot, you have to avoid stepping on it. Use crutches to support you while you walk.
Take time to remove dead skin cells regularly. If you are able to effectively use this, you can allow new and healthy skin cells to appear. This increases the rate of healing on your foot ulcer. Do this slowly and be careful not to remove healthy skin cells. You wouldn't want to create new wounds which might cause new ulcerations to form.
Try using alternative methods to heal wounds. Oxygen therapy has been used by a significant number of people in order to improve oxygenation on the wounds.
If you have high blood sugar levels, you will have a hard time trying to make your ulcers heal. Be sure to monitor your blood sugar levels. Follow what your doctor has recommended to you. You might have oral hypoglycemic medications or you might be taking injectable insulin preparations. Be sure to take these medications regularly to help control your blood sugar level. Your wounds can heal naturally if you are able to keep your sugar levels low or within the normal range.
